A royal flush is a straight flush that starts from 10 and features jack, queen, king, and ace in the same suit. There is no better poker hand ranking than a royal flush – fact. If you get this on the flop then you know you have a 100% chance of victory – so it’s simply a case of getting as much money from your opponents as possible.

There can only be one distinct hand in a royal flush. This is because you need five unique cards from the same suit in the card deck to make it.

There are 13 different distinct ways that you can make the third best hand in poker. This is because you can only make one of these hands for every type of card in the deck (from 2 to ace).

Rumour has it that the fourth best poker hand ranking gained its “boat” nickname after a gambler lost their river boat to another player – they lost because their opponent’s full house beat their straight flush. But what is it? A combination of two cards that are the same alongside three cards that are the same – For example, joker-joker/queen-queen-queen.

Full house is such a strong poker hand because there aren’t a huge number of distinct hands for it – 156, to be exact.

Full house is the strongest poker hand ranking that many casual players get during the course of playing. One of the reasons for this is that the frequency for a boat is quite good – at 3,744.

There’s a fun fact about the probability of getting a full house that sports fans will adore – while the probability of you getting one is 0.1441%, the cumulative probability is 0.17% – which is the same probability of an NFL game ending in a tie.

So-called because it means “fullness or abundance,” a flush is when you have a hand that is made up of any combination of five cards of the same suit – such as having five hearts. It completes the top five in the list of poker hand rankings, though, you’d feel pretty unlucky to lose with a flush.

Because you only (we say only!) need to have any five cards of the same suit to make a flush, there 1,277 distinct hands in a flush. However, one there’s one thing to remember about a flush – that a nut flush (with an Ace) is the distinct hand you want to have.

Although it’s a great hand (often good enough to win you a game), the frequency of a flush runs into the thousands – 5,108.

Also known as a set (if your starting hand is a pair) or trips (if two of your three cards come from the board), there’s a sizeable 858 distinct poker hands in a three of a kind.

There’s a greater frequency of getting a three of a kind hand (54,912) than there are seats in Liverpool FC’s Anfield stadium (54,074).

Two pair is an extremely straightforward hand to understand – it’s any occasion where you make two pairs, such as two kings and two aces.

With 858 distinct poker hands for a two pair, the chances of you making a hand that’s often good enough to win is pretty good.

One pair is one of only two examples in the poker hand ranking list that you can make pre-flop. Ideally, you’d like a pair of aces (aka the rockets), because believe us, this will very often be more than enough to win the pot – especially if you can get it all in pre-flop.

You’ve got a 50.1177% chance of finding yourself in a position where high card is your best hand. Unfortunately, your chances of that being good enough for you to win the hand are a lot worse than 50%. 

What are the odds against me getting a high card in poker? 

While you’ll like the odds of getting a high card in poker (they’re a ridiculous 0.995-1), you won’t be very happy if that’s the best you get – particularly if you started with ace-king and end up losing to a pair of 2s (especially if that pair was made from the board!).
